Dial-up networking error 602

This usually means that another windows program has control of the modem.

This can sometimes occur with poorly written software not closing the port correctly, or failing to respond. In most cases, it is necessary to reboot the computer in order to solve this problem. This can also occur if you use 16 bit communications programs such as fax managers. These programs require exclusive use of the modem port and therefore stop other programs using it. If you disable these programs then the modem is usually released ready for use again. Another option would be to upgrade to 32 bit versions of these programs.

You can end individual programs by pressing CTRL ALT DEL and ending task manually. Unless you are completely comfortable with doing this then it is usually easier to reboot computer. If rebooting does not solve your problem then we would suggest that you uninstall and then re-install your modem (CONTROL PANEL-> Modems / Remove).

If AOL was or is installed on the computer, delete all AOL adapters, and MS Windows dial-up adapters (networking), then re-boot and re-install the MS dial-up adapter. This may solve the problem.
