What is a DSLAM?

The DSLAM is a Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer - it's the box that your ADSL line terminates in at the BT exchange. It takes the ADSL lines and combines their traffic to send it across the BT network.  It's at this point that the BT contention ratio (50:1 or 20:1) is introduced.
