What are contention ratios?

The main drawback of ADSL is contention ratios. ISDN and leased line services offer dedicated bandwidth to users however Broadband for Business ADSL is a contended service provided through BT's network stated at 20:1. This means that if there are several active users (up to 20) on the network, the available bandwidth will decrease resulting in the service slowing down.

The Home/Small Office service uses a 50:1 contention. This means that if there are several active users (up to 50) on the network, the available bandwidth will decrease resulting in the service slowing down.
